The World Biggest Lie, well Other then WMD's

Welcome readers to my inaugural fitness discussion (brought to you via the fancy gadgetry of Energy Interactive Fitness and the creative minds of one of the finest Fitness Staffs in the Tri-State Market).  The first discussion necessary to be brought to all of our attention, is predicated upon our insecurities as an "overweight" society.  I recently read a statistic that 26.7% of our population is labeled as obese (according to the Centers for disease Control and Prevention).  Ten years ago, that percentage was under twenty percent!  With that insecurity at hand, turn your televisions on (if you have one) during the late hours of the day and tell me what you see?  Infomercials!  What do they sell?  A lot of things.  What am I getting at?  The "ab" market,  use this product and lose your "love handles".  Flatter Abs....have your ears perked up?  Your eyes, i bet are at least squinting with a curious glaze.
What discussion i am presenting here is the philosophy of spot reduction.  What is spot reduction?  It is the act of pinpointing a specific area of your body.  Then selecting specific exercise for that part of the body and then performing a high volume of repetitions of those exercises in anticipation of a specified slimming (or toning) of that area of your body.  Folks SPOT REDUCTION is a MYTH!  Sorry.  Our bodies collectively grow and shrink.  When was the last time you ate an entire cake, and then awoke the next morning to an ass size four times the size of the previous day?  By the way overeating will not immediately lead fat storage (it takes a small amount of time to truly manifest itself as body fat).  You collectively grew.
Vise versa, you can collectively shrink as well.  What is body fat?  Stored energy.  How do you get rid of it?  By expending it.  How do you expend it?  You take in a little less then you exert out.  One pound of fat yields somewhere close to 3,800 calories.  What does that mean energy wise?  Exercise straight through for somewhere between three and a half and five hours.  Lets hypothetically say you are in an experiential mood and you decide to burn 3,800 calories, so you strap on your heart rate monitor and you hop on a treadmill and run forty miles.  Mission accomplished, my monitor reads 3,800 calories burned.  Pat yourself on the back...you just pulled 36 muscles in your legs, hips and back....Just joking, i hope that none of you ever pull a muscle.  Seriously though, your body has alternate fuel sources, therefore you will not only burn fat (which your body will do after twenty minutes of low level exertion type of exercises), but you will also burn sugars (most popular form of muscle energy, and in extreme cases (like running for five hours), muscle.
All that work and your abs feel just as flabby?  Not fair!  Want to lose fat in the belly?  Well, you will have to lose fat everywhere (belly is included), but it has to be a slow process.  After all it has taken you your entire life time to accumulate that all that body fat, so why would you expect to get rid of it over night?  True fat loss is SLOW, real slow.  Water weight comes and goes, much like the tide along the shore line.  Water in...water out is as simple as a little too much salt or not enough.  Water weight is not fat weight!
In order to actually exert more then you take in you need to understand how you exert
Activity + Metabolism = Energy Out
Energy In = Meals, snacks, and Drinks
If Energy In < Energy Out = Flatter abs, but, legs and everything else
but if Energy In > Energy out = BIGGER belly, butt, legs, etc...
No trick, nothing up my sleeve.  No magic Pill.  No fancy device.  Old Fashioned Hard Work, Day In and Day Out.  Just be Patient.  Be consistent.  Most importantly, believe that your small steps will lead to big strides.  This is Captain Patrick Benson, Published Author and Fitness Guru signing out, but before i do, let me select some choice readings for everyone to read over and ponder.  If anyone has any questions (or comment and/or concerns), please by all means come and find me.
